Leogang Resort Guide

A little quieter than some of Austria’s better-known luxury ski resorts, but blessed with an outstanding lifts system and a huge network of slopes, Leogang is an excellent choice for those who want lots of time on the snow and plenty of variation.

There are plenty of ski options to keep you busy. Intermediates and those just starting out have so much choice though and it’s a great location for a family ski holiday where you have mixed-ability groups. As well as the huge Ski Circus, the resorts of Saalbach and Fierbrunn are both within easy reach, too.

The village itself, a mixture of traditional and modern architecture, is quite spread out, so there’s no one busy ‘hub’ and apres ski tends to be a little less hardcore than in some of the bigger ski resorts. Leogang is known as the Home of the ‘Lassig’ or ‘laid back’ and the town lives up to that name. If you’re after somewhere a little more peaceful where it’s all about skiing, you’ve found the right place.

That said, there’s lots more to it, with a burgeoning food scene and lots of fabulous mountain eateries. Organic, local and seasonal food is the order of the day and Leogang has more organic shops and farms than anywhere else in Austria. It’s also a bit of a centre for ecological design, with much of its infrastructure using green energy, such as the large biomass heating plant nearby. The town is also the proud recipient of several ecological and environmental awards.

What We Love About Leogang

The amazing lift systems, are super-fast and link several different ski areas, so you can make the most of each day’s skiing.

Getting to Leogang

Salzburg Airport is just an hour away, while Innsbruck Airport is less than two hours away. Both Saalfelden and Leogang have railway stations.

The Skiing to Leogang

With an altitude of 830 to 2,096m, there’s such a wealth of areas to adventure in and you should find what you’re looking for somewhere. The north-facing home slopes hold onto the snow very well. There are also 9km of slopes with snowmaking available and 353 snow cannons.

Just above the village are some really quiet slopes, and you can access the Asitz mountain via two gondolas with relative ease. There’s much to enjoy here, and many don’t bother to explore much further than this.

However, should you choose to, Leogang allows you to access 408km of linked slopes via one of the world’s most impressive and whizzy lift systems. From the top of the Asitz, there are long runs down to the village through the forests as well as fast lifts that take you up to gentler slopes and link in with the Saalbach Valley. From here, you have the choice of a huge number of red and blue runs.

If you’re after a challenge, head for the slopes above Fierbrunn. Beginners will want to stay close to the training areas. For intermediate-level skiers, however, there’s plenty to keep you busy all week.

The Best Places to Eat and Drink in Leogang

Leogang is known for its cosy mountain restaurants with fabulous views. Almost wherever you are in the Ski Circus region, you’ll find somewhere to stop for a little lunch or some après ski. The Asitzbrau mountain restaurant at the Asitzbahn and Steinbergbahn lift station always has a lively atmosphere, along with brewhouse-style food, and for authentic local food and a rustic feel, try Die AlteSchmiede nearby.

For a meal to remember, we always recommend the award-winning Restaurant Kirchenwirt, which has an amazing wine list, or the local, family-style menu at Huttwirt. Of course, if you want to be truly spoiled with the best food, check out our catered luxury ski chalets.

Head (along with everyone else) to the Kraller Alm at the Hotel Kraller for après ski. You have to experience it to believe it, and you won’t be disappointed if you’re looking for fun.
