Cervinia Resort Guide

Nestled in the heart of the Italian Alps, Cervinia is a charming alpine village that offers a picturesque winter wonderland. Known for its stunning mountain vistas and world-class high-altitude skiing, Cervinia is a true gem in the Valle d’Aosta region of Italy.

Cervinia has a rich history, exhilarating outdoor activities, and a cosy ambience that makes it a must-visit destination.

Cervinia is primarily known for its exceptional skiing and snowboarding opportunities. With access to over 300 kilometres of groomed slopes, it’s a haven for winter sports enthusiasts of all levels.

What sets Cervinia apart is its connection to Zermatt, Switzerland, creating a vast ski area with much of it over 2000 metres in altitude, known as the Matterhorn Ski Paradise.

The high altitude, the modern lift system and the varied terrain offer an unparalleled skiing experience set against the backdrop of the iconic Matterhorn peak.

When to Visit Cervinia

The months from December through to March are considered the peak of the ski season in Cervinia. During this time, you can expect the best snow conditions and a high likelihood of fresh powder. Cervinia’s high altitude makes it an ideal destination for late-season skiing, ensuring excellent snow conditions and an extended ski season. The resort is bustling with skiers and snowboarders, creating a vibrant atmosphere.

Eating and Drinking in Cervinia

Eating and drinking in Cervinia combines Italian culinary excellence with a cosy mountain ambience. The charming village offers a range of dining options, from traditional Italian trattorias serving hearty pasta dishes and wood-fired pizzas to upscale restaurants with gourmet cuisine. Savoury local specialities, including fondue, polenta, and hearty stews, are perfect choices for warming up after a day on the slopes.

Additionally, the après-ski scene is lively, with bars and cafes serving everything from Italian wines and craft beers to hot chocolate and espresso, providing a vibrant and convivial atmosphere to share stories of the day’s adventures while gazing at the stunning views of the Matterhorn.

Skiing in Cervinia

Cervinia is part of the Matterhorn Paradise Ski area, (which includes Zermatt) and is arguably one of THE best ski areas in the world. The ski area is huge and high. The highest lift on the piste map is up to the Matterhorn Glacier at 3883 metres. But what sets the ski area of Cervinia apart from other ski resorts is that you can quite easily spend the whole day skiing at an altitude of over 2000 metres, or even mostly over 2500 metres!

The high-altitude slopes mean the snow stays in great condition until late in the season so Cervinia is a fantastic choice for skiing in April.

Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, Cervinia has something for everyone. The wide, gentle slopes are perfect for novices looking to learn, while the more advanced skiers can challenge themselves on steeper terrain and enjoy off-piste adventures. Snowboarders can hit the terrain parks and halfpipes, while cross-country skiing enthusiasts will find well-maintained trails amid incredible scenery.

What to do in Cervinia

If skiing isn’t your cup of tea, Cervinia offers plenty of other activities to enjoy. Snowshoeing and winter hiking are great ways to explore the serene, snow-covered landscapes of the Aosta Valley.

Guided tours are available, or you can venture out on your own to discover hidden alpine treasures. The beautiful views of the iconic Matterhorn peak are a constant backdrop for cable car and chairlift rides, providing a visual feast for nature lovers and photographers.

With the arrival of a new ski lift, it is now possible for non-skiers to travel from Cervinia over to Zermatt and enjoy a day out in the iconic Swiss resort.
