Luxury Villas > Greece > Kefalonia

Kefalonia in Greece is the largest of the seven Ionian islands, located between Lefkada and Zante. With snorkelling hotspots, caves ready to be explored and pretty towns scattered along the water’s edge, it is a great choice for a luxury villa holiday for families and friends alike.

Kefalonia Region Guide

The wild and craggy hills form a spectacular backdrop to the island’s main attractions – the beaches. The most famous beach is Myrtos and with its dramatic cliffs cascading down to the bright white beach, the coast is considered among the most impressive in the Mediterranean Sea. Firefly Collection’s luxury villas in Kefalonia have incredible sea views so you never have to venture far to take in the vistas.

With some of the best beaches and luxury villas in the whole of Greece, Kefalonia is one of Greece’s best-kept secrets. Being the largest of the Ionian Islands it tends not to feel crowded. Whether you are walking along the picture-perfect Mytros beach, or enjoying a long lazy lunch in a marina-side restaurant in Fiscardo, it doesn’t have the overwhelming crowded feel that many of the islands have. The island was the setting for Louis de Bernières’ fabulous novel ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’, and despite the success of the novel – and the film adaptation – it remains wonderfully un-spoilt by mass tourism. Kefalonia is an island ideal for both family holidays and romantic breaks with its magnificent scenery and stunning beaches, you’ll feel truly spoilt when you arrive on a luxury villa holiday here.

The beaches are undeniably some of the main attractions of Kefalonia. With the crystal blue waters and relaxing atmosphere, stress will feel a million miles away. Myrtos, Antisamos, Lourdas and Skala are regarded as some of the nicest beaches, but with 237km of coastline and 39 beautiful beaches, you’ll never lack a choice of where to explore.

However, if you want to see what more the island has to offer, there is plenty to explore on a luxury villa holiday here. From picturesque villages to old medieval castles and beautiful monasteries, Kefalonia has it all. A seaside village to see is Assos, with its brightly coloured houses and the Venetian castle at the top, where you’ll easily get swept up by the charming atmosphere of this small village. Take a stroll around the narrow streets of Assos and then head to a small local taverna on the quayside overlooking the bay for a Greek mezze and some cold wine.

When to Visit Kefalonia

May through to September are considered the best times to go, with the peak months of July and August having the highest temperatures. May is thought of as a beautiful month to visit as the sea gets warmer and the island starts to bloom with flowers, whilst September is thought of as perfect by the locals as the weather is ideal. Be aware that many beach bars and sports centres won’t open until early June.

What We Love About Kefalonia

We love the caves for an adventurous day trip from your luxury villa in Kefalonia. The cave lake of Melissani can be explored by rowing boats, with Mother Nature creating a natural skylight above so the sun shines down through the cave, lighting up the turquoise waters. In comparison, the Drogorati cave is ready for an adventure on foot, with dramatic stalactites and stalagmites dripping from the roof. The naturally made Chamber of Exaltation has such great acoustics, that it sometimes plays host to unique musical and cultural events.

Getting to Kefalonia

We love heading to Fiscardo and relaxing in one of the waterfront restaurants with some fresh seafood, whilst taking in the views of the neighbouring island Ithaca, as well as the private yachts and fishing boats. Fiscardo is one of the few towns to survive the 1953 earthquake, so a great place to see some of the few historical buildings on the island.

The Best Places To Eat and Drink in Kefalonia

Tasty Greek mezze platters and lunches picking at dish after dish of little nibbles can stretch on for hours when in Kefalonia. Fresh seafood obviously features highly on the menus but be sure to try the homegrown tipple ‘Robola’, Kefalonia’s most famous wine, whilst on your luxury villa holiday. It’s dry and honey-coloured and is often presented in bottles that are wrapped in hessian with a wax medallion on the front.

Off the beaten track, we recommend after a visit to the Venetian Castle of Saint George head to Il Borgo. The intimate terrace is the perfect spot to watch the sunset over the mountains beyond.
