Basic Information About Capri in Italy

For centuries the island of Capri has had the reputation of being a sophisticated and exclusive luxury holiday destination. Characterised by craggy limestone cliffs and lush vegetation, it is off the coast of Southwest Italy, near Naples.

All around the island’s coast are stunning natural rock formations, including the often sought out Faraglioni rocks, and views out over the shimmering blue waters of the Bay of Naples. Clusters of bright flowers such as bougainvillaea and jasmine fill the air with their scent. The rugged landscape is explored along a series of marked paths, and the summit of Monte Solaro can be reached by chairlift.

A handful of upmarket beach clubs are dotted around the island, and there are two main towns, Capri Town and Anacapri. Both are glamorous and have a plethora of upmarket boutiques, beautiful piazzas and atmospheric Italian trattorias. The best-known attraction on the island is the Blue Grotto, an enchanting cave which can be reached by boat from your luxury villa. Capri also has several well-preserved Roman villa sites, including Villa Jovis and Villa Damecuta, both built by the Emperor Tiberius.

Capri is only 45 minutes by hydrofoil from the city of Naples, so it makes a popular day trip from the mainland. Boats arrive on the island at Marina Grande and a funicular railway runs from the harbour to Capri Town. You can get around by the famous convertible taxis, or another option is to hire scooters, a fun way to get around whilst on a luxury villa holiday in Capri.

When to Visit Capri

Capri has a mild Mediterranean climate, with temperatures reaching a maximum of around 31 degrees centigrade in the hottest months of July and August. These are also the busiest months on the island. The summer season starts in May and goes through to October. Winter in Capri is mild, but the island is quiet, with most restaurants and attractions being closed and limited ferries to the island.

How to Get to Capri

There is no airport in Capri so it is accessed by ferry, which takes around 40 minutes from Naples, where you will find the nearest airport.

The Best Places to Eat and Drink in Capri

There’s no lack of choice when it comes to fine dining on Capri. Authentic little Italian trattorias such as Le Arcate in Anacapri offer local specialities such as seafood risotto and wood-fired pizzas. A little exploration will lead you to restaurants with breathtaking clifftop locations or set within lemon groves and flower-filled terraces – one of our favourites is Da Paolino, where you can dine with the citrus scents of the lemon trees that hang overhead.

An elegant setting for dinner is on the menu at the Aurora pizzeria and at the glamorous Rondez-Vous at the Grand Hotel Quisisana. There are also some very upmarket beach club eateries to try on a luxury villa holiday here, such as Il Riccio, clinging to the rocks by the entrance to the Blue Grotto and specialising in fresh seafood buffet and its day-dream inducing Temptation room, filled to the rafters with delicious deserts.

Above all, however, a visit to Capri would not be complete without sitting at one of the chic pavement cafes in Capri’s famous Piazzetta, enjoying a refreshing aperitif or a strong Italian coffee, before heading back to your luxury villa to spend a lazy afternoon around the pool.
