Description

Filled with chocolate box charm, this thatched house is the perfect location, both for cosy winter retreats, as well as typically English summer breaks. Elkstones is a luxury holiday home in the Cotswolds, backing onto lush meadows and within striking distance of many of the area’s quaint towns and villages.

The Cotswold stone building stands in landscaped gardens, which include a haha and plenty of space to wander and enjoy the peace. A sun terrace provides a spot to sit with a coffee in the mornings as the day warms, or to relax with a cocktail as the evening draws to a close. There’s also a spacious dining terrace, with room to seat everyone for barbecues and long lunches in the fresh air.

Walk up the steps and through the imposing wooden doors and you find yourself in Elkstone’s hallway with its impressive staircase. The interiors have the feel of an old English manor house, but with all little luxuries of a contemporary boutique hotel. The ground floor is the heart of this traditional home. The elegant living room features a woodburning stove and large, comfortable sofas as well as a baby grand piano – arrangements can be made for a pianist to play for you, should you wish. The light and airy farmhouse kitchen is a sociable place in which to cook and eat, with a large island and a breakfast table, and there is a stylish dining room for more formal meals. A quiet study area at the back of the house offers a peaceful place to curl up with a book or catch up on emails.

The lower ground floor is entirely given over to fun. The heated swimming pool has jets for you to swim against and there’s also a cedar wood sauna with its own cloakroom and drench shower. For those who like to stay active there’s a fitness area with free weights, too. Finally, there’s a home cinema room with projector screen, surround sound and plenty of squashy sofas and beanbags to sprawl on during a film.

Location

Elkstones is a luxury holiday home in the Cotswolds, just outside Chipping Campden, a bustling market town with a plethora of pubs, cafés, shops and restaurants.

The nearest airports are Birmingham, 50 minutes away, and Bristol and London Heathrow airports, each 1 hour 30 minutes away. Elkstones also has its own helipad, and there is a light aircraft field at nearby Ullington for small private planes.

The nearest railway station is Moreton-in-Marsh, just under 15 minutes away, and taxis can be arranged from the station to the property.

Eating

Elkstones is a luxury self-catered holiday home with plenty of inspiration in the buzzing local food scene to keep you well fed throughout your stay.

The stunning, fully-equipped oak kitchen is a real ‘heart of the home’ with its wooden beams, granite worktops and limestone floor all adding rustic charm. It’s a great place to gather with friends to cook at the large gas range with griddle or maybe even make your own pizzas or loaves in one of the two large ovens. Designed as a relaxed place to eat, it features a solid wood table to seat 10 for lazy breakfasts and laid-back dinners.

For more formal meals, head to the dining room with its huge stone fireplace as its focal point and oval table beneath a beautiful chandelier.

You can pick up local delicacies at Maylams Deli in nearby Chipping Campden, where you’ll also find a range of great cafes, pubs and restaurants. The delightful Daylesford Organics shop is also not far away.

Kids

Children of all ages will enjoy the freedom of life at Elkstones. With five acres of grounds and landscaped gardens there’s plenty of room to play and lots of space in the open-plan rooms indoors, too.

There’s lots for kids to do nearby, including Cotswold Wildlife Park, Warwick Castle and Stratford-upon-Avon for young theatre fans, and plenty of outdoor adventures, from hiking to horse-riding.

Back at Elkstones, there’s always something to keep them busy, from the indoor swimming pool with jet streams to the cinema room with slouchy chairs and bean bags where they can sprawl in front of a movie while the adults enjoy evening drinks out on the terrace.
